What Rights - Fitness to Practice

Student fitness to practice

It may seem odd, but did you know that as a student, if you make an allegation of misconduct against your practice education facilitator or mentor, it can end up with a fitness to practice process with you as the subject?

That's what happened in a recent case with one of my clients, an Occupational Therapist student.  When the accused mentor denied the allegation, supported by another member of staff, not only was the allegation found not proven, it was then alleged that my client had dishonestly made a false allegation and the University Fitness to Practice process was initiated.

Luckily, she decided that the usual student advisor would not suffice and looked for outside specialist advice.  We worked on her submission to the panel together and the result was a resounding no case to answer - in the words of the Head of School "no student had ever presented such a detailed case to the panel".

It is particularly pleasing to be able to help a student at the very beginning of their professional journey, and I hope to see this student go on and do well in their career, with this unpleasant incident firmly in the past.
