Yunnik CBT fraud cases

I don’t think I have previously written about the NMC fitness to practise cases that came out of the Yunnik CBT scandal , from one of the Ibadan test centres in Nigeria.

In a nutshell, the NMC received information from one of its test centres in Nigeria that suggested results were being obtained through fraudulent means. Subsequent investigation led to those results being challenged and nurses being required by the NMC to retake suspect tests.

1440 applicants took their tests at the centre in the relevant period, and were therefore required to retake their tests. Additionally, 515 nurses who had already entered the register in reliance on a suspect test, were also required to retake their tests.

48 nurses from the 515 were then lined up for hearings to decide whether they should stay on the NMC register. The NMC specifically alleged that those nurses obtained their results fraudulently.

So far, the NMC has held 9 hearings to decide the nurses’s case. Only 2 nurses have been successful in retaining their registration, one of whom I represented at their hearing.

We are now entering a period where several more cases will be decided. One case was decided in a meeting (the nurse did not attend) a couple of days ago, and unsurprisingly, the nurse lost their registration. It is essential to have strong and experienced representation on these difficult cases, and without that, success is unlikely. I have a number of these cases, and I look forward to defending my clients vigorously in the next set of hearings.
